Welcoming a new baby into your home is magical — and sometimes a little scary. You want them safe. You want them to be comfortable. You want them calm, and you want peace of mind. That’s where a good swaddle blanket comes in.

Wrapping your baby gently in a swaddle feels familiar. It mimics the snug, cosy world they just left. But not all swaddles are equal—the fabric matters. The size matters. And when it comes to fabric, muslin (especially with a bamboo blend) stands out.

At Bebekish we deeply understand this.

Our experience, especially having a son with sensitive skin, eczema and sensory issues, taught us how vulnerable babies are. We know how the right fabric can make a real difference.

So we’ve designed large-size bamboo-muslin blankets and swaddles that check all the boxes: softness, breathability, generous size, and safe design.

In this blog we’ll cover:

  • how safe swaddling works, what experts say

  • what muslin blankets bring in terms of comfort and safety

  • why bamboo-blend muslin is special (and how it applies to Bebekish products)

  • how to use them safely

  • real-life comfort and size benefits

  • final thoughts.

Swaddling: Safety First

Before anything else: swaddling must be done safely. We don’t want to wrap baby in something beautiful that ends up compromising safety. Fortunately, a number of professional bodies have published clear guidelines.

Back-to-sleep and no loose blankets

The American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) says babies should be placed on their backs for all sleep times — naps and nights.

They also emphasise that soft bedding, loose blankets, pillows, toys — all should be kept out of the baby’s sleep area.

If you choose to swaddle, the swaddle should not be so tight that your baby can’t breathe or move their hips.

Hip-healthy positioning

The International Hip Dysplasia Institute highlights that swaddling must allow the baby’s hips and knees to bend up and out at the hips — not straight together and tight. That position supports healthy hip development.

Temperature & overheating

Overheating is a real concern. The Canadian public health source reminds us: dress the baby for the room temperature, don’t put them to sleep with heavy outerwear, no hats indoors.

A swaddle that is too thick or a nested bed with extra blankets can raise the risk for suffocation or SIDS.

When to stop swaddling

Swaddling is safest for younger babies who cannot yet roll over on their own. When your baby starts attempting to roll (often around 2-4 months, sometimes earlier), it’s time to transition out of a full swaddle.

Benefits of swaddling

Interestingly, a systematic review found that swaddling is associated with increased duration of quiet sleep in infants, and fewer sleep state changes (for babies naïve to swaddling).

So in short: yes to swaddling — when done correctly, with safe fabrics, on the back, with room for hips, in the right size and wrap. That’s the foundation.

Muslin Fabric: Comfort & Safety Together

So once you’re doing swaddling safely, the next big question is: what fabric? Muslin blankets are an excellent contender.

What is muslin?

Muslin is a lightweight, loosely woven fabric — often made of cotton or a cotton-blend. Because of its weave, it allows air to flow. That means it’s more breathable than many heavier blankets. In baby swaddling, that matters.

Breathability and reduced overheating

Airflow = comfort + safety. Since babies cannot regulate their temperature as well as adults, a breathable material helps protect against overheating. A public health swaddling guide says: “make sure the swaddle is not too tight… check that baby is not too hot (sweating, damp hair, flushed cheeks)”.

By choosing muslin, you’re giving your baby a material that works with their body — rather than trapping heat.

muslin swaddle

Gentle on delicate skin

Muslin’s texture is typically soft and becomes softer with each wash. For babies with more sensitive skin — like eczema, irritation, sensory processing challenges — you want a fabric that doesn’t scratch, irritate, or rub. Muslin ticks that box.

Large size = versatility

One of the often-overlooked benefits of a good muslin swaddle blanket is size. A large piece means you can wrap more confidently. You can tuck it securely. You can use it beyond swaddling — as a lightweight blanket, a pram cover (with caution), a burp cloth, or sensory blanket.

And from your brand’s perspective (Bebekish) you already know how important this versatility is. You’re designing for babies with sensory sensitivity, ADHD, autism, skin issues — so size, softness, usability matter more.

Suitability for all seasons

Thanks to its openness and light feel, muslin is ideal for warmer weather or indoor climates where baby could overheat. It still offers the security of a swaddle without turning the baby into a little bundle of heat.

The Best Muslin Fabric - Bamboo

Bamboo – silky soft & hypoallergenic

Multiple sources indicate bamboo fabric is ultra-soft — some even say “next-level softness” compared to standard muslin cotton.

It has natural hypoallergenic, antimicrobial properties, making it a wonderful choice for babies with sensitive skin.

Bamboo – temperature regulating & moisture-wicking

Bamboo fabrics are also known to help regulate temperature and wick moisture. That means when baby’s body heat rises, the fabric helps release it; when it drops, it helps retain warmth. The result: a more comfortable, less disruptive sleep.

Breathability combined with softness

By combining muslin-style openness with bamboo fibre softness, you get the best of both worlds. A breathable wrap that doesn’t sacrifice that cosy, gentle feel on baby’s skin.

Sustainability and parent values

Bamboo is a fast-growing, renewable resource and is often marketed as a more sustainable fabric. For parents who care about eco-values (which many do), this adds another positive dimension.

Fit for sensory & eczema-prone babies

Given your personal story — your son Ethan’s eczema and skin irritation, and his sensory processing disorder — designing with bamboo-muslin makes good sense. A fabric that’s gentle, breathable, soft and calming supports your brand promise: for babies who need comfort, regulation, and warmth without scratchiness or heat stress.

Large size for secure wrapping

Your blankets and muslins are generous in size (for example, a 120 × 120 cm or similar) so you can confidently wrap, fold, tuck, and ensure the fabric stays securely in place. A larger swaddle gives you more fabric to tuck safely — reducing the chance of edges becoming loose.

That size also means the swaddle can be used:

  • for full swaddling in early months

  • as a light cot bed blanket when the swaddle stage is done

  • as a sensory blanket or calming wrap when baby (or toddler) needs a soft layer for regulation

  • as a nursing cover, pram throw, play-mat cover.

Versatility & longevity

Bebekish swaddle blankets aren’t just for those first few months. Because they’re large, soft and made of high-quality bamboo fabric, they last. They become part of your baby’s world: sleep, cuddle time, pram rides, sensory regulation moments.

Everyday luxury with peace of mind

Made from 100% bamboo, these blankets as part of the supportive, thoughtful environment your baby deserves — especially children with extra sensory or skin challenges. That soft, breathable, large-sized wrap becomes a tool for calmness, comfort and safety.

How to Use a Muslin Swaddle Blanket Safely (and Effectively)

Now that we know the benefits, let’s make sure the usage aligns with the safety guidelines and maximises comfort.

Step-by-step safe swaddling

Following the guidance from Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Safe Sleep Academy:

  1. Lay the muslin blanket flat in a diamond shape (point facing up). Fold down the top corner just a little.

  2. Place baby on their back on the blanket, with shoulders just below the top fold.

  3. Place baby’s right arm slightly bent by their side. Bring left side of blanket across chest, under right arm. Tuck the fabric under the body.

  4. Fold up the bottom point of the blanket over baby’s feet and tuck behind.

  5. Bring the right side of blanket across the chest, snuggly but not too tight, and tuck under baby’s left side. Make sure baby’s head and face are clear; no fabric loose near neck.

  6. Check the chest wrap: you should be able to fit 2 fingers between the blanket and baby’s chest. That ensures it’s snug but not restrictive.

  7. Put baby to sleep on their back. If baby starts trying to roll, or does roll, stop swaddling arms in and move to a sleep sack or other safe sleepwear.

Additional tips for best comfort

  • Use breathable fabric (Bebekish Bamboo Muslin is). Avoid heavy blankets underneath.

  • Make sure the room temperature is comfortable. Dress baby lightly under the swaddle so they’re neither too cold nor overheating.

  • Always keep hips loose: legs should be able to flex and move outwards. The wrap should not constrain hip movement.

  • Stop swaddling when baby shows signs of rolling or strong leg/kick movement — often around 2-3 months.

  • After the swaddle phase, transition into other forms of sleepwear (like a wearable blanket, light layers) to maintain safety.

Your baby deserves comfort, security and safety. The swaddle blanket you choose plays a small but meaningful role in delivering all three.

By choosing a high-quality muslin (especially a bamboo-muslin blend) swaddle blanket, you are giving them:

  • A breathable wrap that helps regulate temperature.

  • A soft, gentle fabric that supports sensitive skin and sensory needs.

  • A generous size that allows you to wrap securely, tuck safely, and use it beyond the swaddle stage.

  • A versatile piece of baby gear that supports swaddling, naps, prams, sensory time.

  • A mindful choice in fabric that aligns with values of quality, comfort, and sustainability.

At Bebekish we’re proud to design with this in mind — because we’ve lived these challenges ourselves (with eczema, skin sensitivity, sensory processing) and we know that the right fabric makes a difference. Choosing a blanket is more than just picking a pattern; it’s choosing comfort, calm and safety.

So if you’re looking for a swaddle blanket that’s gentle, secure, breathable and built to last — consider the bamboo-muslin swaddle from Bebekish. Wrap your baby in softness. Wrap them in safety. Wrap them in love.
