Becoming a parent changes everything—including how we think about the future. As new mums and dads, we start to see the world through our child’s eyes. And with that comes a deep desire to protect them, not just now, but in the years to come.

For many parents, this leads to something called eco anxiety, a growing concern about climate change, waste, and the health of our planet. It can feel overwhelming. But here’s the truth: eco parenting isn’t about perfection. It’s about intention. And small, consistent choices can create a big impact over time.

If you're just getting started, this Eco Parenting Starter Kit is for you. It’s packed with practical, affordable, and sustainable tips, plus our favourite Bebekish essentials to help you take the first step toward a greener life for your family.

Why Eco Parenting Matters

I remember it like it was yesterday. Ethan and I were walking down the street when we saw piles of rubbish scattered on the pavement. I couldn’t believe how disrespectful people could be. I said to Ethan, “Be careful, sweetheart, there’s rubbish all around. Don’t worry, the bin men will come and clean it up later.”

He looked at me and asked, “Mummy, why are people throwing rubbish on the street? Don’t they know they should look after the environment like they look after their house?”

I replied, “Yes darling, that’s what we should all do. But unfortunately, not everyone is as thoughtful as you.”

Then he said something that truly stopped me in my tracks:
“Why are you leaving a world like this to us? How are we supposed to clean it?”

That moment struck me deeply. I realised that our daily choices don’t just affect us, they shape the world our children will inherit. If we want to leave behind a greener, kinder planet, we need to start making more conscious decisions today.

Eco parenting means:

  • Reducing waste where possible

  • Choosing products that are safe, ethical, and made to last

  • Protecting your child’s delicate skin and health

  • Teaching values of respect, mindfulness, and sustainability

6 Simple Swaps To Start Your Eco-Friendly Journey

Here are some easy, practical, and affordable changes you can make today to reduce your footprint and protect your baby’s future.

1 - Swap to Eco-Friendly Detergent

Your baby's skin is 20% thinner than yours. Harsh chemicals in conventional laundry products can irritate their skin and pollute waterways. Look for plant-based, fragrance-free, or biodegradable baby-safe detergents.

2- Eat Less Meat

Eating meat all the time is not good for our digestive system. Children and we need protein; however, we do not have to eat it more than 2-3 days a week.

Integrate meat-free days into your family meal calendar. Approximately 133 gallons of water are saved with every meatless meal you consume. And that only multiplies with the size of your family!

Instead introduce your diet the following high protein food;

Legumes & Beans:

  • Lentils (18g protein per cooked cup)

  • Chickpeas (15g/cup)

  • Black beans (15g/cup)

  • Kidney beans (13g/cup)

  • Edamame (17g/cup)

Whole Grains:

  • Quinoa (8g/cup cooked)

  • Buckwheat (6g/cup cooked)

  • Oats (5g/½ cup dry)

  • Brown rice (5g/cup)

Soy Products:

  • Tofu (10g/½ cup)

  • Tempeh (15g/½ cup)

  • Soy milk (7g/cup)

Nuts & Seeds:

  • Almonds (6g/28g)

  • Chia seeds (5g/2 tbsp)

  • Pumpkin seeds (7g/28g)

  • Hemp seeds (10g/3 tbsp)

  • Peanut butter (8g/2 tbsp)

Vegetables (surprisingly high!):

  • Spinach (5g/cup cooked)

  • Broccoli (4g/cup cooked)

  • Green peas (8g/cup)

3) Use Less Plastic

Swap plastic bottles with reusable, washable alternatives.

Not only will you reduce your waste, but you'll also save money over time.

4) Shop At Local Farms

Buying produce and groceries from local farms means fewer transport emissions, fresher food, and support from your community. You also often get organic or low-chemical food, perfect for giving your child a healthy start.

 5) Buy Fewer Better Clothes

Choose quality, not QUANTITY!

Sustainable fabrics like bamboo last for years. You’ll buy less overtime and avoid supporting fast fashion, which is harsh on workers and the planet. Durable items, like Bebekish Clothes and Muslins can be lovingly used for years and even passed along to siblings or friends.

6) Start With One Change At a Time

You don’t have to do it overnight. Pick one small change and give yourself and your family time to adjust.

Turning your family's routine a little greener is a journey, not a sprint. Start with one swap that feels doable this week.

Small changes make a big impact on our environment!
