As a health-conscious individual since childhood, I've always believed in the power of organic living. Prioritising organic foods and products has been integral to nurturing my well-being. Today, we're fortunate to live in a time where eco-conscious options are readily available, making it easier than ever to make sustainable choices for ourselves and our families.

During pregnancy, prioritising self-care isn't just about pampering—it's about creating a nurturing environment for both you and your baby.

Explore gentle practices such as prenatal yoga and meditation to connect with your body and bond with your growing child. I have been using Alo Moves application in the last few years and I have found it very useful. There are also prenatal yoga lessons which you can do it in your home whenever you want.

Consider incorporating natural remedies for common pregnancy discomforts, opting for solutions that are gentle on both you and the planet. The most common pregnancy discomfort is morning sickness.

The Most Common Pregnancy Discomforts

1) Morning sickness

It is a common occurrence during pregnancy, is often attributed to the surge of pregnancy hormones, particularly human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), in the body. While the exact cause remains uncertain, factors such as high levels of hCG, estrogen, and progesterone can contribute to feelings of nausea and vomiting in expectant mothers. Fortunately, there are ways to manage symptoms and alleviate discomfort:

  • Smaller, frequent meals consisting of protein-rich foods, which may help settle the stomach. Avoiding rich, fried, or highly spiced foods can also minimise triggers for nausea.
  • Hydration: Stay well-hydrated by sipping on fluids like water, juice, or herbal teas throughout the day. Ginger teas or ginger ale may offer relief for some individuals, while peppermint tea can be soothing for others.
  • Herbal Remedies: Explore natural remedies such as ginger or peppermint, which have been traditionally used to ease pregnancy sickness. However, it's important to consult with a healthcare provider before trying any herbal supplements, especially if you're taking other medications.
  • Alternative Therapies: Consider complementary therapies like acupuncture or reflexology, which some individuals find helpful in managing nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Hypnotherapy and relaxation techniques may also be beneficial for reducing stress and anxiety.

2) Pregnancy Skin

Invest in eco-friendly skincare and beauty products to avoid harmful chemicals. During pregnancy, hormonal fluctuations and increased blood flow can lead to various changes in the skin. Stretch Marks: As the abdomen expands to accommodate the growing baby, the skin may stretch beyond its normal capacity, resulting in the formation of stretch marks. These marks often appear as red or purple streaks and may fade to a lighter color over time. I found it Bio-oil very helpful. 

Acne and Oiliness: Fluctuations in hormone levels can trigger an increase in oil production, leading to acne breakouts and oily skin for some pregnant individuals. Conversely, others may experience clearer skin during pregnancy due to hormonal changes.

Spider Veins and Varicose Veins: Increased pressure on blood vessels, coupled with hormonal changes, can contribute to the development of spider veins (small, dilated blood vessels) and varicose veins (enlarged and swollen veins), particularly in the legs.

Itching and Sensitivity: Some pregnant individuals may experience itching, sensitivity, or dryness of the skin, especially in areas like the abdomen, breasts, and thighs. This can be attributed to stretching of the skin, hormonal changes, or pre-existing skin conditions exacerbated by pregnancy.

Hair and Nail Changes: Hormonal fluctuations can also affect hair and nail growth during pregnancy. Some individuals may notice increased hair thickness and shine, while others may experience hair loss or changes in nail texture and strength.

Fueling your body with nourishing, sustainable foods is crucial during pregnancy. Embrace a plant- based diet rich in organic produce, whole grains, and plant-based proteins. 5) Dairy Products: Include dairy products such as milk, yogurt, and cheese in your diet to ensure an adequate intake of calcium and protein. Calcium is essential for building strong bones and teeth in both you and your baby.

6) Healthy Fats: Incorporate sources of healthy fats into your diet, such as avocados, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish like salmon and sardines. These fats provide omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for fetal brain development.

7) Legumes: Beans, lentils, chickpeas, and other legumes are excellent sources of protein, fiber, iron, and folate. They can help prevent constipation, a common issue during pregnancy, and provide essential nutrients for both you and your baby.

8) Iron-Rich Foods: Include iron-rich foods like lean red meat, poultry, fish, beans, lentils, and fortified cereals to prevent iron deficiency anemia, which is common during pregnancy.
