When my son Ethan was born, sleep was one of the biggest challenges we faced. He would wake up as many as nine times a night, and the lack of sleep was affecting every part of our life—from work stress to emotional wellbeing. As a first-time mum, I was desperate for a solution.

After months of trying different techniques, the breakthrough came when we focused on two things: building a consistent sleep routine and creating a calm, healthy sleeping environment. In this blog, I want to share what worked for us in hopes it helps other tired, overwhelmed parents too.

Why a Baby Sleep Routine Matters

Babies don’t know what time it is—but they do understand patterns. A consistent baby sleep routine gives them a sense of security and signals that it’s time to rest. Over time, I learned to spot Ethan’s sleep cues: rubbing eyes, yawning gently, stretching his body.

Starting the wind-down at the first signs of tiredness helped avoid overstimulation. That was the first step to more peaceful nights.

Healthy Sleeping Tips That Changed Everything

Once I understood the importance of a routine, I started looking at how Ethan was sleeping—his environment, his clothing, even the fabrics touching his skin. That’s when everything changed.

1. Darken the Room

Especially in the summer months, a bright room can make it hard for babies to settle. We invested in blackout curtains, and the difference was immediate. A dark room helps stimulate melatonin production, supporting better baby sleep.

2. Set the Right Temperature

Experts recommend keeping the nursery between 16–20°C. Too hot or too cold can disrupt sleep and make your baby uncomfortable.

3. Dress Your Baby Right

Avoid synthetic materials. Choose organic baby clothing and breathable sleepsuits made with bamboo-cotton blends. These materials regulate temperature naturally and are gentle on your baby’s delicate skin.

Ethan had a dust allergy that we didn’t know about at first. Once we switched to bamboo baby bedding, his sleep improved significantly. Bamboo is hypoallergenic, anti-bacterial, and incredibly soft—ideal for babies with sensitive skin or eczema.

Our Nightly Baby Sleep Routine

Once the environment was calm, we introduced a soothing bedtime routine that helped signal “sleep time” consistently:

1 - Keep it cool - dress your baby with soft, comfortable and breathable clothing.

2 - Consistent bedtime routine; bath, massage, book, milk and bed

3 - Low light and quiet room: invest in blackouts in the summer!

4 - No over-bundling - light sleeping bag in the summer, warm sleeping bag in the winter if necessary

5 - Right room temperature; 16-20C (60-68F)

6- Check if your baby is hot by touching their back of their neck!

7 - Pick the right mattress and bedding sets - bamboo is preferrable

8 - Soothing scents - Lavender will help your baby ease off

9-  Gentle patience

10 - Music can be magical - classic music is good for baby's brain too.

If Ethan didn’t settle right away, I’d pick him up and stay with him until he was drowsy—then gently place him in his cot before he fully fell asleep. This helped him learn how to drift off on his own.

Looking back, I wish I had known how crucial both the sleep routine and sleep environment are. It’s not just about helping your baby rest—it’s about helping you recover too.

Using natural baby fabrics, keeping the room comfortable, and creating a predictable nighttime flow can make a world of difference. Every baby is different, but the right sleep setup can help your little one feel safe, soothed, and ready for a good night’s rest.
